FebruAscolta! 15+ Italian Exclamations to Sound More Like a Native Despite protests by residents lugging jugs of discolored water, officials maintained that the water was safe. Soon after the city began supplying residents with Flint River water in April 2014, residents started complaining that the water from their taps looked, smelled, and tasted foul. Although the river water was highly corrosive, Flint officials failed to treat it, and lead leached out from aging pipes into thousands of homes.īrittany Greeson Lead levels in Flint water This precipitated the tragic decision in 2013 to end the city’s five-decade practice of piping treated water for its residents from Detroit in favor of a cheaper alternative: temporarily pumping water from the Flint River until a new water pipeline from Lake Huron was built. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder appointed an emergency manager (basically an unelected official chosen to set local policy) to oversee and cut city costs. This was the lay of the land in 2011, when Flint, cash-strapped and shouldering a $25 million deficit, fell under state control. Nearly one in six of the city’s homes has been abandoned. The city found itself in a precipitous decline: Flint’s population has since plummeted to just 100,000 people, a majority of whom are African-American, and about 45 percent of its residents live below the poverty line. But the 1980s put the brakes on that period of prosperity, as rising oil prices and auto imports resulted in shuttered auto plants and laid-off workers, many of whom eventually relocated. In the mid-20th century, Flint-the birthplace of General Motors-was the flourishing home to nearly 200,000 people, many employed by the booming automobile industry. Not surprisingly, the Flint River is rumored to have caught fire-twice.Īs the industries along the river’s shores evolved, so too did the city’s economy. The waterway has also received raw sewage from the city’s waste treatment plant, agricultural and urban runoff, and toxics from leaching landfills. For more than a century, the Flint River, which flows through the heart of town, has served as an unofficial waste disposal site for treated and untreated refuse from the many local industries that have sprouted along its shores, from carriage and car factories to meatpacking plants and lumber and paper mills. Long before the recent crisis garnered national headlines, the city of Flint was eminently familiar with water woes. It was ultimately the determined, relentless efforts of the Flint community-with the support of doctors, scientists, journalists, and citizen activists-that shined a light on the city’s severe mismanagement of its drinking water and forced a reckoning over how such a scandal could have been allowed to happen. Later studies would reveal that the contaminated water was also contributing to a doubling-and in some cases, tripling-of the incidence of elevated blood lead levels in the city’s children, imperiling the health of its youngest generation. The Michigan Civil Rights Commission, a state-established body, concluded that the poor governmental response to the Flint crisis was a “result of systemic racism.” Inadequate treatment and testing of the water resulted in a series of major water quality and health issues for Flint residents-issues that were chronically ignored, overlooked, and discounted by government officials even as complaints mounted that the foul-smelling, discolored, and off-tasting water piped into Flint homes for 18 months was causing skin rashes, hair loss, and itchy skin. Barnes’ response to what this honor has meant to her as it appeared in the program.A story of environmental injustice and bad decision making, the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, began in 2014, when the city switched its drinking water supply from Detroit’s system to the Flint River in a cost-saving move. Kay Carroll Barnes, long-time math teacher at Flint River Academy, was recently honored by the PAGE Foundation at the state STAR teacher student Achievement Recognition Banquet for her record of being named STAR teacher thirty times. What does blank verse do to the line? It lengthens it, of course, but the meter also pushes the line into the next line and so on, giving blank verse a strong, narrative pull. With a little practice the meter will soon be controlling the way the line moves and sounds, and it will modify your natural rhytms to adhere with the pattern. A second way is to simply write in pentameter by using roughly ten syllable lines, then, going back and changing syntax and diction to emphasize the iamb. This can be very difficult to do if you have never tried writing blank verse before, and I have found the above method does not work best for me. Let it decide where the line length and line breaks should be without imposing your own natural habits. Allow the meter of the poem to drive you as you write it. Line breaks should be determined by the meter. As well, the poem should be read in sentences, not by line break. Each line does not need to read "de-dum, de-dum, de-dum, de-dum, de-dum" but, rather, that that meter can be over-imposed onto the natural rhythm of the line. Remember, the poem should be read naturally without forcing the meter onto the rhythm. Then, modify the diction and the syntax (be careful not Yoda always try to sound) in such a way that the iamb becomes the predominant foot. One way to write in blank verse is to take an old poem and turn the existing lines into ten-syllable lines. In the first line of "Mending Wall", for instance, the first iamb could be read as a trochee, with the stress falling on "there" instead of "is." Of course, how a person scans a single line or an entire poem depends on the reader's natural rhythms and inclinations, and, while there may be better ways to scan a poem, there is not always a single correct scan. Sómething there ís that dóesn't lóve a wáll. With scanning, one can tell if a poem is metered or not and, if so, what kind of meter is present, as in "Mending Wall:" Scansion, by the way is how poets demonstrate the meter of a poem using accents to show the stressed syllables. The first line, for example, scans as a trochee and four iambs. When you read the words, the natural rhythm is not de-dum, de-dum, de-dum-it is not strictly iambic. That sends the frozen-ground-swell under it, Something there is that doesn't love a wall, Notice, however, that not each foot is an iamb, but Frost mixes up the feet, as in the first few lines of the poem. Thus, the poem is written in iambic pentameter. For example, the dominant foot in Robert Frost's "Mending Wall" is the iamb, and there are five feet per line. The name of the dominant foot coupled with the number of feet in the line provide the name of a poem's meter. Double Iamb- four sylalbles, unstressed-unstressed-stressed-stressed, as in "will you eat it?" A double iamb is counted as two feet.īlank verse can be written with any combination of the above feet.Amphibrach- three syllables, unstressed-stressed-unstressed, as in "forgetful".Spondee- two stressed syllables, as in "hot dog".Labeling the foot depends on where it is located in the line. Headless Iamb or Tailess Trochee- one stressed syllable.Dactyl- three syllables, stressed-unstressed-unstressed, as in "probably".Anapest- three syllables, unstressed-unstressed-stressed, as in "disengage".Trochee- two syllables, stressed-unstressed, as in "standard".Iamb- two syllables, unstressed-stressed, as in "today".It is difficult-almost impossible-to write a blank verse poem consisting of all iambs, and other types of feet get used more often than one may think. Along with the iamb are 3 other standard feet and a number of variations that can be employed in a blank verse poem. While it may not be as common as open form, it retains an important role in the world of poetry.īlank verse can be composed in any meter and with any amount of feet per line (any line length), though the iamb is generally the predominant foot. Regardless, blank verse was embraced by Yeats, Pound, Frost, and Stevens who skillfully brought the tradition through this century. Marlowe's "mighty line," which demonstrated blank verse's range and flexibility, made blank verse the standard for many English writers, including both Shakespeare and Milton, and it remained a very practiced form up until the twentieth century when Modernism rebelled and openly experimented with the tradition. It was developed in Italy and became widely used during the Renaissance because it resembled classical, unrhymed poetry. Blank Verse is any verse comprised of unrhymed lines all in the same meter, usually iambic pentameter. However, gameplay between the two is very similar, and in Homeworld Remastered Collection, the lines are further blurred as both games now use the same engine. I highly recommend that if this is your first time playing the series to play them in order, as the charm of the original makes the second one shine a bit brighter than if it was played on its own. I found to to be a bit tangential, and the antagonists of the game, the Vaygr, don’t evoke the same raw anger that the Taiidani did. Although it’s still interesting, it can’t compare to the tenacious flight of the Kushan. Without spoiling the excellent saga of the original, all I can say is that it takes place 100 years after the conclusion of the first game. Unfortunately, Homeworld 2’s story is of less consistent quality. Even though most of the story is told through voiceovers and the movements of starships, I felt truly connected with the Kushan as if I actually went through the journey with them. By the time you make it to the end there is a true feeling of satisfaction. Your exodus across the galaxy is a relentless struggle against the odds and is one of my favorite campaigns in video game history. Along the way you’ll face off against the corrupt and despotic Taiidani Empire, trade with the enigmatic Bentusi, and discover the past of your race as you attempt to reclaim your rightful place in the stars. You are Fleet Command, and the Kushan are depending on you to lead them to Hiigara. It would be equipped to overcome any adversity and be the first Kushan space-faring vessel to be capable of faster-than-light travel thanks to the salvaged Hyperspace Core found on the Khar-Toba. The map was pointing “home.” Over the next hundred years every man, woman, and child worked toward one objective: to complete the ship which would carry over 600,000 of them to their ancestral home planet. The Guidestone was recovered from the ruins of the ship and carved upon its chipped face was a map of the galaxy leading to a distant star inscribed with a single word: “Hiigara.” No translation was needed as every Kushan knew it. The discovery of the ancient starship Khar-Toba in one of the planet’s vast deserts confirmed what many already speculated: Kharak was not the origin of the Kushan people. Starting on the desert planet Kharak, Homeworld follows the tribal peoples of the Kushan. Rig: AMD FX-6300 3.5 GHz, with 8GB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 7950, Windows 8.1 64-bit After acquiring the IP with the winning $1.35 million bid, Gearbox announced it would be bringing an updated Homeworld and Homeworld 2 to a new generation in the form of the Homeworld Remastered Collection. THQ’s bankruptcy in 2013 led to the franchise’s rights going up for auction. The top-notch writing and 3D playing field etched themselves into my memory and left me clamoring for a sequel.Īlthough the story continued in Homeworld: Cataclysm in 2000 and Homeworld 2 in 2003, the series went dark and new copies weren’t even available. However, none made a bigger impression on me than Sierra’s Homeworld did. Sometimes my gambles paid off, like with Star Trek: Klingon Academy and Freelancer, and sometimes I’d get a dud like Allegiance, which was a good game, but one whose servers had been shut down before I even bought it. More than likely, if my mom allowed me, I’d fall in love with the simple promise of being whisked away to the stars. Starsiege: Tribes, Suikoden II, Half-Life, Giants: Citizen Kabuto and more were all stabs in the dark that paid off with hours of enthrallment in front of the glow of a CRT.Īs a young sci-fi fan, all anyone had to do back then to wrestle my hard-earned money from my wallet was throw some spaceships on a box. I discovered some of my favorite games with just the blind promises of the back of a box. The best you could do was to read a review or watch a grainy, minute-long Quicktime video that you spent an hour to download on 56k while hoping your $50 wasn’t spent in vain. It was a time when every video game purchase was a gamble. Find the best free programs like KisMAC for Mac.
